Windows 7 Boot Updater lets users customize the images, animations, and text displayed during the OS boot sequence.

When the Windows 7 operating system loads, the user is met with a black screen that announces the OS and has an animation to indicate progress or at least inform the user that the process has not locked up. This opening sequence is stylish but not customizable and, therefore, the same from one Windows 7 installation to the next. This is where a program like Windows 7 Boot Updater comes into play. Using it, the user can change the default background image, change the default foreground image to either a static image or animation, and even change the default text, such as “Starting Windows” and “Microsoft Corporation.”

Windows 7 Boot Updater is fairly simple and straightforward. It even makes automatic backups of any of the original OS assets that the user changes. With these backups in place, the user can simply revert to the original load screen configuration with just a few clicks. The program is not, however, user friendly, and it does expect familiarity with Windows 7. Help information is kept to a minimum, and in the unlikely event that something does go wrong, the users are on their own. This is probably the reason why the developer has never moved beyond the Beta phase to a final release.

Using Windows 7 Boot Updater is as simple as downloading the archive, unpacking it, and executing it. It runs within the Windows 7 environment with a graphical user interface. All changes can be made right there in Windows, but there is no preview mechanism. This means that the user will have to reboot the OS, watch it boot, and determine from there if they are satisfied with the alterations. If not, then a rinse and repeat is required. In addition to the boot screen, this program also allows the user to alter the resume screen, which is what Windows 7 displays when waking up from being suspended.

In the event that something does go wrong, it is possible that Windows 7 will not load and instead be stuck in the Windows Recovery Environment. The bad news in this scenario is that the Windows 7 Boot Updater program provides no recourse. The good news is that the Windows Recovery Environment does, and the user can overcome the problem by deleting the current winload.exe file and then restoring it with the backup Windows has available for such instances.
